Most of the exhibits which follow are dated by UPenn to the 19th century. Some are as early as the 16th century (although we feel that they may be too early). The copper casts are from the Edo People of Nigeria. Other exhibits are from elsewhere in Africa. A Museum plaque under the Kifwebe mask below states that "The style of mask was used only in the late 19th and early 20th century." In any event, none of the exhibits can be used by themselves to show that the Black peoples of Africa had any advanced artisitc or metalurgical skills before contact was made with European explorers and settlers.
